HOW TO STORE RICE
Proper storage is the difference between rice that stays fresh for years and rice that goes rancid or infested within weeks.
At Agriko, we've perfected rice preservation through years of farming. Whether you're storing a 2kg bag for daily use or 50kg for long-term food security, the principles remain the same: control the environment to stop degradation.
The Science of Freshness
To keep rice fresh, you must defeat its four primary enemies. Understanding these threats is the key to successful storage.
MOISTURE
Humidity above 15% invites mold and bacteria. Keep it dry to prevent spoilage.
HEAT
Temperatures above 75°F accelerate oil oxidation, leading to rancid flavors.
OXYGEN
Oxidation degrades nutrients and flavor. Airtight seals are non-negotiable.
PESTS
Weevils can hatch from invisible eggs. Prevention is easier than cure.
5-STEP STORAGE
Follow this proven process to ensure long-term rice freshness and protection from degradation.
FREEZE 48H
Critical step! Freezing kills any microscopic insect eggs that might be present, preventing future infestations.
AIRTIGHT CONTAINER
Use glass jars with gaskets or BPA-free plastic with locking lids. Avoid original paper or thin plastic bags.
ADD PROTECTION
For long-term storage, add oxygen absorbers (300cc per 5kg) or dried bay leaves as a natural deterrent.
LABEL CLEARLY
Mark with the rice variety and date. Use the FIFO (First In, First Out) method to rotate your stock.
COOL DARK PLACE
Keep away from sunlight, ovens, and dishwashers. A cool pantry or basement is ideal.
STORAGE OPTIONS
Choose the right storage method based on your rice type and intended shelf life.
WARNING SIGNS
Check for these indicators before cooking. Consuming spoiled rice can be harmful.
RANCID SMELL
Sour, musty, or paint-like odor indicates oil oxidation.
⚠️ Discard ImmediatelyVISIBLE MOLD
Black, green, or white fuzzy spots caused by moisture.
⚠️ Discard Entire BatchINSECTS/WEBBING
Small beetles, larvae, or silky webs inside the container.
⚠️ Discard & CleanCLUMPING
Grains sticking together suggests moisture exposure.
⚠️ Check for Mold/SmellEXPERT TIPS
Pro strategies from years of rice farming experience.
KEEP SEPARATE
Older rice can contaminate fresh rice with pests or spores. Always use the old batch first and clean before refilling.
DIVIDE BATCHES
If buying 10kg, divide into smaller 2kg containers. This limits air exposure to the entire batch when opened daily.
CHECK MONTHLY
Do a quick 30-second inspection. Open the container, smell it, and look for pests. Early detection prevents total loss.
BUY FROM FARMS
Supermarket rice may have sat in warehouses for months. Buying direct ensures you start with the freshest possible grain.
